29th EFNS - Czech Republic - Harrachov Foresters

Based on Dr. Erwin Lauterwasser's (at that time President EFNS) invitation the Czech Republic officially joined the EFNS activities in Toblach (Doobbiaco) Italy in 1992. It was again Erwin Lauterwasser who continued a very intensive cooperation with the Czech Republic not only in the preparation of the 29th EFNS in 1997 in Harrachov, but he also helped with the link of the cross-country skiing loipes in Krušné Hory – Erzgebirge – between Germany and the Czech Republic, region Klínovec and Boží Dar.

The organisation of skiing competitions for foresters had its history in the Czech Republic already before 1992, but only on the local level - f.e. by States Forest Direction (Sevemoravské státní lesy Krnov). The official involvement of the Czech Republic and especially the preparation of the 29th EFNS in Harrachov led to the foundation of the Association for Foresters Sports Activities in CR (SPAL) – in 1994.

The goals have been outlined:
  • organizational platform to ensure regular participation of foresters from the Czech Republic in EFNS (since then without any interruption regular participation of 50 -60 competitors),
  • preparation of EFNS in Harrachov in 1997,
  • organisation and establishing of the of domestic ski races on the national level in the Czech Republic (giant slalom and biatlon), where the number of competitors is about 300 every year.

Organizing of the 29th year of EFNS in Harrachov in 1997 (relatively shortly after the Velvet Revolution) and the opening of the borders had big response in EFNS community. Proof of this is that, there were more than 1000 active competitors registred for the competition (till that time the highest number of competitors outside Germany). The weather was not very desirable. During two days it changed from extremely warm (Wednesday, Thursday) to rather cold, freezing (Friday). The organisation was very demanding, however, thanks to the deployment of the entire team, especially from the Giant Mountain National Reserve (KRNAP), the loipes were kept in such a good condition that no one got damaged their skis and the competition was successful. Despite these challenging conditions the competitors proved that they were able to cope and there were 1007 competitors, who sucesfully finished the race.
The feedback from the competition was entirely positive – during the event and a couple of years after. Excursions, professional evening discussions with the highest management of Forestry CR) and also opening and closing ceremonials were highly appreciated and valued. Participants were leaving with very positive and long term experiences.
In conclusion, it is very important to express many thanks to the founders of this tradition, which gradually extended in such a unique European vocational sports activity.
Equally important, perhaps even more important, is that an extensive network of personal contacts between participants (now from 22 European countries) have been made and so we can know and share the knowledge of ways and specifics of forest management in lands of Europe.

1997 -29. EFNS – Tschechische Republik – Harrachov

EFNS in Harrachov.
