Trotz fehlendem Schnee waren die Bedingungen in Kontiolahti dank Kunstschnee und kalten Temperaturen sehr gut, die Rennen erfolgreich und die Teilnehmer erfreuten sich der finnischen Gastfreundschaft........
Joensuu, with its 75,000 inhabitants, is the thirteenth largest city in Finland. The metropolitan area includes not only the city center but also a large outback area, which stretches to the Russian border. Located just 20km north of the town Kontiolahti, Joensuu attracts numerous Biathlon participants from all over the world every year.

The small town Kontiolahti itself is located on the shores of Lake Höytiäinen. Numerous Biathlon World Cups take place in Kontiolahti. The town was twice host ot the the Biathlon World Championships.

Joensuu`s city center is located at the estuary of the river Pielisjoki. The cityscape is dominated by rectangular street pattern. Wide avenues and numerous shopping centers with typical Finnish shops are waiting for their visitors.

Worth seeing are the art museum and the Jonensuu Arena, a wooden Multi-purpose hall.


Joensuu ist mit ihren ca. 75.000 Einwohnern die dreizehntgrößte Stadt Finnlands. Das Stadtgebiet umfasst neben dem Stadtzentrum ein weites ländliches und waldreiches Hinterland, welches sich bis zur russischen Grenze zieht. Nur 20km nördlich der Gemeinde Kontiolahti gelegen, lockt Joensuu jedes Jahr zahlreiche Biathlon-Teilnehmer aus aller Welt an.

Der kleine Ort Kontiolahti selbst liegt am Ufer des Höytiäinen-Sees. Hier finden zahlreiche Biathlon-Weltcups statt und auch die Biathlon-Weltmeisterschaften wurden hier schon zweimal ausgetragen.

Joensuus Stadtzentrum befindet sich an der Mündung des Flusses Pielisjoki, der Name Joensuu bedeutet auf Finnisch „Flussmündung“. Das Stadtbild wird von der rechtwinkligen Straßenanordnung geprägt, breite Alleen geben ein Gefühl von Weitläufigkeit und in den zahlreichen Shopping-Centren warten typisch finnische Geschäfte auf ihre Besucher.

Sehenswert sind das Kunstmuseum sowie die Jonensuu Arena, eine Mehrzweckhalle aus Holz.

Wo liegt Joensuu?

Joensuu liegt im Zentrum Nordkareliens im Osten Finnlands, 437 km nordöstlich der Hauptstadt Helsinki. Neben dem Stadtzentrum gehört zum 2381,8 km² großen Stadtgebiet von Joensuu ein ausgestrecktes ländliches Hinterland bis hin zur russischen Grenze. [Quelle: Wikipedia]
